Botox cosmetic is a medication that has become one of the most popular and effective facial cosmetic treatments available today. The main reason Botox has become so popular is that when administered correctly by a trained certified professional it is a safe, reversible and relatively inexpensive procedure. Dramatic results are obtained by reducing or eliminating wrinkles without having invasive facial surgery. Of course, there probably isn’t anybody out there who hasn’t heard of Botox, but there are plenty of people who do not have a clear understanding of exactly what it is, how it works and the potential benefits.

The simplest definition is that Botox is a protein that has been purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When administered properly, it effectively relaxes and prevents contraction of the muscles of facial expression substantially reducing the signs of wrinkles. Wrinkles on the face are caused when the muscles contract drawing the skin together to produce a line. This repetitive movement happening hundreds of times a day eventually forms a line in the skin that becomes permanent. As we age the elasticity of the skin diminishes and doesn’t rebound to its former position and the lines become more defined. If the facial muscle can’t contract it can’t cause the line.

Botox treatments typically take 1 to 2 weeks to become effective. The procedure is relatively painless with minimal side effects. Botox has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world because it reduces the signs of aging quickly, affordably and conveniently. The most common use of this product is in areas of the face where wrinkles are most prominent including the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet and smile lines. In addition, Botox is also used for other medical conditions including headaches and jaw tension.

It is true that Botox is generally very safe and well tolerated by the vast majority of people. The best way to avoid potential problems is to make sure that the medical professional administering the injections is qualified and the proper protocol is followed. Dentists are in a unique position when it comes to being qualified to administer Botox. Our training and understanding of the anatomy and innervation of the head and neck is very detailed. Dentists are constantly dealing with the muscles of facial expression and spend the majority of their anatomy training in this area.

Consultation with the patient should occur to discuss what the patients treatment goals are and if these types of injections are the right choice for them. A proper medical history form is filled out or updated to make sure there are no medical reasons that would prevent treatment. This would include medical conditions, allergies, naturopathic remedies etc. The face should be mapped to determine injection sites and photos taken to document the before and after results. There should be a follow up appointment with the patient to confirm results and ensure that there are no complications. Of course sterile equipment, solutions and protocol should be used.

Botox injections are long-lasting, but they are not a permanent solution to wrinkles. In order to maintain the look this treatment can provide, it will be necessary for the patient to have them re-administered 3 to 4 times a year. Between work, getting kids to their scheduled appointments and life patients have very busy days. By providing this service to our patients we are able to complete treatments when it is convenient for them. Eliminating the inconvenience of multiple appointment times reduces the stress of your day. Treatment can be completed while children are at their recare or after your cleaning. At the Advance Dental Group we take the same detailed and thorough approach to these treatments as we would for your dental treatment. Contact us today to set up your appointment.
